Cast urethane technology consists of bringing together two or more reactive chemicals in their liquid state and mixing them together at the appropriate ration. The reactive liquid chemicals are called “prepolymers” and “curatives”. They are mixed together under specific ratio and temperature conditions. This causes a chemical reaction, turning them into a solid shape. Once the chemicals are mixed together they form polymer chains and begin a liquid to solid transition. This process can be used for a wide range of applications because the end result can be basically any shape or form imaginable.
The cast urethane process begins with a pattern. Typically the pattern is a CAD file or a physical part. If provided with a CAD file a master can be created using Stereolithography (SLA; also known as optical fabrication, photosolidification, solid free-form fabrication and solid imaging). The master can also be created by other methods, such as CNC machining. The master is perfected to the level required to accomplish the desired overall appearance of the casted parts.
Generally, silicone molds can create 15 to 30 parts before issues occur. Additional molds are made using the original master if larger quantities are needed.
The master is then encapsulated in silicone rubber. Once the rubber is cured, the master is removed leaving behind a mold. After the mold is perfected the urethane is selected and, if necessary, the color is matched. Then the mold is injected with the liquid urethane. Once the urethane has cured the part is removed and the process begins again. Curing times may vary depending on the urethane from thirty minutes all the way up to a day. This is called gel time.
